As you can see in the sample below, this is a clear, legible lettering system (pat. pending) that uses no curves. This is what we feel is the breakthrough aspect of this system. Rather than trying to force your child to conform to a style that is not functional for him, you can use a style specifically matched to his strengths and weaknesses. This is a system that he will be able to use for the rest of his life! It can also be used as a transitional system, letting you delay teaching a more common lettering system until your child is developed enough to handle it.
Dysgraphic children usually have a great deal of trouble in placement as well as letter formation. Our letter-box system gives full guideline support, both horizontally and vertically. The double box helps keep the letter sizing conceptually clear: the letter goes on the box. After using the letter-box system, the child has been conditioned regarding proper positioning and can graduate to normal lined paper. The child first traces over the light text, then copies it into the empty boxes below. As your child progresses, the letter-boxes get smaller. This allows your child to graduate to more useful sizes.
The workbook contains 98 pages in the following categories (not in order):
#Pages Category 1 Alphabet Presentation 5 Instructions to Teacher 13 Upper-Case Single Words 13 Lower-Case Single Words 26 Sentences Using Both Upper-Case and Lower-Case Words 26 Bible Verses with Numbers and Punctuation 10 Stroke Practice 4 Empty Letter-box Pages for Free Practice
The Bible verses are in the American King James translation - this translation is doctrinally identical to the KJV, but is much easier to read.
Unblocked! is specifically for the dysgraphic student, whether diagnosed or not. It is not for the young child who is a little slow in picking up writing. We have used the terms "child" and "him" because most dysgraphic students are boys, but this workbook is designed to be used by anyone older than five. There are many adults with dysgraphia that would benefit greatly from this workbook. Check out the dysgraphia links below if you are not sure.
We have made this workbook of higher physical quality than is common for a workbook. Your child is already struggling and we feel that he should have to deal with further frustrations from "cost reductions" by the publisher.
- The workbook is printed on clean, white paper. Didn't you hate having to write around the wood chips on cheap material when you were a kid?
- It is printed on heavy paper (24 pound) to eliminate bleed-through.
- It is 8-1/2 x 11 with horizontal orientation to allow large lettering.
- It is plastic coil bound (real coil, not that cheap comb that comes apart) which lays flat, preventing the pages from flipping up.
